Two weeks after I arrived in Bangalore, I got a chance of watching a play at a Ranga Shankara theatre here.
After googling about it. I had planned to reach the place little early and spend some time alone there before the rendezvous with friends.
Ranga Shankara reminded me of Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) for obvious reasons. Although area wise it is essentially a small place and is limited to theatre unlike JKK.
Best part of such culture centric place always happens to be the coffee shop. Ambience of the open cafeteria and the energy exhibited by the art-embracing crowd gives a feeling of a parallel universe. A universe where Monday and Sunday are just like all the other days of the week; where words are not just uttered but are spoken; where every individual is unique; where meaning is more important than the reasoning….
Well in short a place where I can think anything i want, be anything I want and no one will judge me!
Chai brewing my thoughts made it a perfect start to the evening. And the short spell by the rain added just the perfect smell to the experience!
Friends accompanying me for the play made a perfect statement of punctuality as we just made it in time for the play titled ‘Treadmill’. In the very first Act of the play the essence of the skit was very well conveyed, when one of the character who is running as if on a treadmill explains, “I keep running and running with all my strength I keep running. Yet I reach no where. I am still at the same place.” Story of two people in relationship, running to beat the speed of the metropolitan and in course leaving themselves behind. Treating with the warmness of humour the play had dialogues like:
“Sir, ये बात तो ऊपर से निकल गयी.”
“ कोई बात नहीं, जाने दो. फिर कभी अगर जिंदगी में मिले तो पकड़ लेना और पूछना कि भाई उस दिन तो ऊपर से निकल गए, आज पकड़ में आये हो.”
In another act the play goes in flashback where the lead actor relives his experience of running away from home. It sure made me travel my past too!
Most intriguing part of the play was when the story-teller and the listener interchanged the roles, ultimately signifying the uncharacteristic aspect that their lives had taken.
The play left us contemplating our own lives as the characters echoed, “आपकी और मेरी ज़िदगी में फर्क ही क्या है?”
With the right mix of emotions and beautiful garnishing of words at the right places the play was worth a watch.
The rest of the evening just got better in the company of fine friends!
