I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is. - Alan Watts
It is been long that i have been thinking about this ideology now.
The reason that made me think and reminiscence on it is that it has increasingly became a cliche.
What does one mean when he/she says that ‘Live in the Present’?
Taking it literally it is a Utopian concept. It is humanly impossible to just be in the present. Each and every action of ours in present is influenced by our experiences of past. And even if one is suffering from amnesia their actions in present is for the perceived future.
We all work that way. We take decisions with the learning of present and with anticipation for future.
Then why the whole mess about living in the present.
In the quotes and in the self help book this line is used for emotional well being. But when a person with stable emotional mind-set and happy go lucky life style advocates the concept of living in the moment; it feels like more of an excuse than anything else. Excuse; to shed the responsibility for associated past and future. And this appals me.
Let us not fool ourselves by using this very important concept as an excuse.
From philosophical point of view, it is indeed an amazing way to live life. Because it entails you to learn, grow and act positive. Learn from past (not repent). Grow in present (not sulk). And act positive for future (not pessimist).
