It is always difficult to come home late from office.
When I reached home today, it was nice to see my husband not watching news.
As he was not occupied with any of the electronic gadgets, we did something rare!
We talked!
Interestingly I married him essentially because I felt we could easily have good conversation. But then I had not taken into account all the news channels available, twitter, news apps on the mobile phone and Facebook sometimes.
Anyhow, as we were having some random conversation, husband's eyes wandered to the clock on the wall. And he exclaimed "In 'your' talks I almost missed my serial". I was suddenly jerked to a past memory of my mother scolding for making her miss her TV serial because of some petty gossips. SIGH!
So I curiously waited while he switched channels to find 'his' serial. Well the female lead was pretty hot. Story looked as funny as it could be of any prime time serial on Indian Television. The male lead was not appealing at all so I drifted away to do some work.
Earlier today in the office, one of the colleagues had remarked that how the Indian Television Serials more than anything had taken its female viewers to an era back. Which made me think that, quite interestingly females of the age group 20 to 60 plus all watch these shows and contribute to the earnings of the big shots of the small screen industry. I am curious to know how the Gen X and Gen Y got hooked on to these serials. None of these, as popularly known as, Saas-Bahu serials show anything remotely close to how it is in real. But the concern is, which is an extension of what my colleague was referring to, that these soap operas are influencing the realities of the females and even males watching these shows.
This has become an epidemic, where even today the dinner time is adjusted according to the TV serial schedule. When we all know how much the story progresses from one episode to another.
I do not have answer to why these serials have high viewership and lack of good serials is not the right answer.
When 24 a universally hit show is been molded into Indian version and a very good one at that; doesn't get half as good a TRP as Ye Hai Mohabatein or some other hit soap opera.
What is it that these serials offer that no other kind of show does?
Something to think about.
BTW, the husband was back to a news channel five minutes into the serial. So much for pretty faces!
